Swimsuit –one-pieces,two-pieces or style-pieces?

Our great internet bible Wikipedia defines a swimming costume as “A swimsuit, bathing suit,or swimming costume is an item of clothing designed to be worn while participating in water sports and activities such as swimming, diving, surfing, water skiiing,or for any activity in the sun, such as sun bathing.”

It is probably amongst one of the items of clothing the most worn in summer, yet can cause us so much strife when choosing what type of swimwear to go for. Men have it easy –swimming trunks or boardies (I know which I prefer, and which, probably, the majority of the female population would prefer).

But the question for females is…do you go for comfort over fashion statement? Do you want to step out in style on the beach this summer?  If you don’t know which swimsuit to go for, check out theses brief reviews on the three swimwear options available to you –one piece, two piece and style piece.

One-piece

One of the great pros for the one-piece swimming costume is the amount of cover-up you can get from it. Whether it be high-legged or 50s style with little shorts attached, you can be assured that your tummy will rest hidden underneath that tight swimsuit material and even get a little lift from it. What’s more it pulls you in in all the right places, making you looked (potentially) more toned than you actually are. No more dieting for me,then? Stretchmarks on tummies can be nicely tucked away,if you don’t want fellow beach goers’eyes feasting on your blemishes.

On the down side, however,  it can sometimes look a little frumpy, depending on the style you go for. Try and pick out something which complements your skin tones and look at the various swimming costume styles which are being pushed in the swimwear sections of high street stores. You may not feel as sexy as you first thought when you’re strolling down to the sea in your one-piece next to a bikini clad supermodel.

Two-piece

The bikini,or two-piece,has been around for decades and emanates a slightly more confident, sexier look on the beach. Two-pieces come in various shapes and styles from the bandeau to the halterneck and the tankini to the strappy. In a bikini you tend to feel much more confident in yourself but remember to again pick out a cossie colour which suits your skin. Pale skinners for example should probably avoid light and pale colours unless they are super tanned. For the less busty,a bandeau bikini is a good way to go and a halterneck is a great idea for support if you’ve been blessed with larger bussoms. The obvious advantage is that a bikini exposes more skin so if you’re looking to catch the rays, this is probably the style for you (don’t forget that cream). It’s definitely a lot more hassle-free when trying to wriggle out of you bikini top on the beach when you want to avoid those tell-tale tan lines.

It isn’t,on the other hand, for the body-shy as you’re basically wearing swim-underwear. Plus,if you’re UV conscious and really want to protect as much skin as possible,a full sized swimsuit is a better idea. If you’re also planning on a lot of water action, check you have a good fitting bikini…I’m sure it’s happened to the best of us –including me –that those unexpected waves lift up or pull down our two-pieces at the wrong time!

Style-Piece

Finally,we move onto the style-piece swimwear. When I say style-piece,I mean those fashionista cossies you see celebs, wags and supermodels often wearing on their exotic holidays by the sea. Anyone can pull this off,you just need plenty of confidence and a toned bod. So,it’s not for the faint-hearted. In many ways, you actually reveal less skin than in a bikini but it can obviously be considered a bit more daring, depending where on the costume the cut-outs are :)

This is certainly beach-chic,though,and if you can pull it off, hats off to you. Teem it with large oversized sunglasses and a large straw hat and you’ll look like the perfect celebrity in no-time. It doesn’t have to cost you a fortune either. Many of the high street shops such as Primark,M&S and Topshop all sell stylish swimwear.

So,now the choice is yours. Go and rock those beaches with whichever swimwear style you feel most comfortable in. Although we all want to look go at the seaside,it’s not about the cossie,it’s about enjoying yourself. Have fun!

Currently,Dorothy Perkins has a small sale on swimwear.
